BBC/Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project:

Children, virtual places and the BBC

A one year project financed by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the BBC to research virtual worlds and immersive places for children. The study will use creative research methods with the children, such as art and drama. The project began on the 1st July 2007 and will be completed on the 30th June 2008. Prelimary findings were presented at the Children in Virtual Worlds Conference in May, 2008.

The study will look at:

  • How children create imaginary places in real life

  • How they use Adventure Rock, an immersive and creative play environment

  • What children think of a range of virtual and immersive places

  • Produce a review of the literature surrounding virtual places for children

  • Study the production methods used/necessary to run virtual environments

Doctoral Research:

Hosted Space; The facilitation of Interactive Public Service Content

Five year Doctoral research project on the presentation and hosting of interactive and social media content, with particular reference to the BBC, and supported by the BBC. The project will be completed in December 2007. Ten experimental production workshops with five ‘Interactive Presenters’ explored themes:

  • Presenting for broadband environments such as Media Consoles
  • Bringing the community closer to the broadcast (360 degree content production)
  • Marketing interactive content
  • The facilitation required around brands in multi-platform environments
  • A review of the literature on broadcast presentation and the facilitation of social media
  • The study used participant observation at BBC New Media, and a small scale audience study of the cross-platform brand Celebdaq.
