Nice post Lizzie

I completely agree with you - the kids space online is starting to get very crowded. It's a huge and financially very viable market, but companies will need to create distinct products in order to prosper.

Following the early success of properties like Club Penguin and Habbo, it seems that most companies in the space are focused on the development of new types of virtual worlds for kids. This space is particularly crowded and certainly isn't the only type of play experience that will be successful.

One only needs to look at how varied the range of products are within the traditional toy industry, or the vast range of video game genres available, to realise that virtual worlds will not be the only play experience that will resonate with kids.

We're focused on building a new type of play experience at Moshi and it's one of the reasons why we're very optimistic for the future.

It's still relatively early days for the industry and companies are experimenting with different play patterns and commercial models. The future looks very promising though. Exciting times ahead for developers, as well as the millions of kids that will get to play the games!

Mine is IzadoraRex, Lizzie!

Great coverage by the way!!!! I'm still disappointed at not flying into London for the Children's Virtual World conference. Joi Podgorny filled me in and she had all the lovely things to say. :)

Hope all is grand.

Hi Lizzie,

We met years ago when I presented at the Virtual Communities Conference in London, and we knew one another virtually before then, when I was working as head of online community for FreeZone.

I saw that you were going to be at the "Children in Virtual Worlds" conference and I wanted to say hello.

Coincidentally, I am currently working on a project with BBC Worldwide. I created a transmedia fantasy property called Kaimira, and I have a development deal with BBC Worldwide. I'm also writing the Kaimira book series, and the first book comes out in July (in the UK as well, published there by Walker Books).

I'm not sure I'll be able to make it to London in May, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
